An all-girls private school in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the Atalanta School was an endless source of gossip. Students were all familiar with one another, even knowing private details of others' lives, such as parents' income and where they lived. Ananka described the school as being divided into two groups: Girls with brains, and girls with everything. The girls with brains -- the ones who were in the school thanks to scholarships --, were usually quiet and studious, and would go to school by bus, while the "girls with everything" would usually have maids, famous last names and chauffeurs.
